Moving your Residence from a child's viewpoint
Pretend that you are told that you are moving. You have no part in the decision process. You cannot refuse to go. How would you feel? What stages would you go through in dealing with this unplanned move? Denial/Shock - can't believe it is really going to happen Anger - upset you have to leave Excitement - looking forward to something new Anxiety - nervous about what the new place is like Preparedness - all ready to go Anticipation Fatigue - tired of talking about it Sadness - seeing your room for the last time Tired - all that packing! Overwhelmed - everything is changed Confused - where is my stuff? Waiting - can't it please be done and over with already? Acclimation - getting used to the new stuff and the new place
Adjusting - getting used to the new place Stressful in the new place How to help children cope with moving to a new home:
Do something fun every day to get their minds off the impending move
Do something to relax every day while waiting
Give clear information (incomplete information is worse than no information. "I don't know but I will try to find out" is an honest answer)
Keep regular routines (mealtimes, bedtimes) and outside activities
Get social support from their peer groups Realize that emotions are often magnified under stress Call today to schedule an appointment with Melissa Graham-Hurd.
